Support local this summer

Support local this summer

Summertime can be a high tourism time for some areas and a slow season for others. As for the Valley of the Sun, when temps start rising, tourists start fleeing and even locals head out of town to cooler climates—taking their boost to the local economy with them. This can significantly affect small businesses, local restaurants and family-owned companies that are doing their best to weather the weather! But whether it’s the slow season or not, there is always a good reason to support local businesses—here are just a few:

Small, locally owned businesses serve as a catalyst for growth in the local economy. They provide jobs and opportunities to locals, keeping money circulating within the community. Locally owned businesses are also typically the ones that support the community that supports them. Think about all those sponsor banners lining the fence of a high school supporting sports teams, bands and choirs... yep, most likely, those are small businesses.

Supporting small businesses also gives local residents and other small businesses an opportunity to network and build a sense of community within their town or city. For example, there may be an opportunity to bring other small businesses together for an event, or a community member is looking for a job... stopping into locally owned businesses and meeting the owners can provide endless opportunities for connection, networking, and future endeavors.

Small businesses often offer something more unique than Amazon. So when shopping for a gift, a standout outfit or a unique ingredient that is indigenous to Arizona—start with local businesses. Likely, the owners or employees will be more than happy to offer individualized attention to help shoppers find the perfect gift or item.

Discover a hidden gem or new talent. When visiting an independently owned restaurant or a small local venue, supporters will discover a delicious new dish, a local performer or a signature cocktail that they have been missing out on! Supporting local gives residents the chance to be privy to some unique things that they can then introduce to others. After all, it’s always fun to be “in the know” about a hot new local spot or a to-die-for dish, right?

  • How to support local businesses:
  • Visit a farmer’s market
  • Take out-of-town guests to a favorite local restaurant
  • Share the social media posts of favorite small businesses
  • Leave a positive review on Yelp or Google
  • Purchase gifts from small businesses

When shopping, dining, or taking in an experience this summer or any time of year, think small! Supporting local businesses can have a significant impact—on both the business and the community as a whole.
