Seven ways to support local businesses during the slow season (or any time of year!)

Shopping local is such an important part of any economy, and it can mean the world to small, independently owned businesses, especially during slower seasons. Supporting local businesses doesn’t even always mean being a patron (though that helps too!). There are many ways to support local businesses, even without spending a dime. Sphinx Date Co. offers the following tips for supporting local.

Share their socials — Love a brand’s social media pages? Share them! It’s a fun way to communicate with other local-lovers while supporting a local brand — all without spending a dime!

Become a regular — There is something special about being recognized by the store owner when walking in the door or when a barista has someone’s order memorized. This comes with repeat patronage and taking the time to get to know the business owners themselves. Building a relationship with the ones who run the show is fun, it shows major support to the business, and it gives patrons that “Hey Norm!” feeling when they walk in. After all, it’s fun to go “where everybody knows your name!”

Tell everyone about it — Love a neighborhood coffee shop or cute locally owned boutique? Spread the word! While it’s fun to discover a hidden gem (and perhaps keep it to oneself), the best thing shoppers can do to support a spot they love is to tell others to go there, too! Take a friend or introduce colleagues to a new discovery. Share the love and feel good knowing this support could boost a favorite local spot’s business.

Stay local, even out of town — When traveling, seek out places off the typical track of most tourists. Do some research, ask residents for recommendations, follow local influencers on social platforms and check out under-the-radar spots. This is not only a fun way to explore a new city, but it can also make travelers feel like locals in cities they’ve never even been to.

Skip the supermarket — Big chain grocery stores might not notice one purchase, but the produce stand at the local farmers' market will. There is also something personal about purchasing food grown in one’s own neighborhood. Choosing to purchase locally grown products — from fruits and veggies to nuts and beyond — is good for local business, the economy and the environment, too.

Leave a glowing review — After a great experience at a local business, head to sites like Google Reviews, Yelp and others to leave a positive review. Be specific. Mention a staff member, a delicious dish or a small boutique that carries great merch.

Support their events and promo nights — If a favorite local spot is hosting a special event or has weekly promo nights, such as trivia night, grab the gang and make it a social occasion or a regular occurrence.
