Nutrients in and Benefits of Dates
Dates are one of Mother Nature’s super foods! These naturally sweet little nuggets are super user friendly and can be incorporated into both sweet and savory recipes. But not only are they delicious, they are healthy too! Sphinx Date Co. shares some of the benefits of dates.
Dates are rich in dietary fiber, potassium, manganese, a variety of B vitamins, vitamin A, magnesium, calcium, vitamin K, sodium and iron. Dates are great for helping digestion due to their high fiber content (around 6 grams in a single serving, which is approximately one fourth of the daily recommended intake). Fiber is essential for proper function of the digestive tract and can help eliminate constipation. They can even be credited for reducing bloating, cramping or an upset stomach.
Dates are even credited for managing blood pressure. According to research posted on the National Library of Medicine website, most “date varieties are rich in potassium and low in sodium, both of which are important dietary factors that help maintain blood pressure in normal range.”
Rich in disease-fighting antioxidants, which protect the cells from free radicals that could cause harmful reactions in the body and lead to disease. Dates are high in carotenoids, which are beneficial for heart health and can help reduce the risk of eye-related ailments; flavonoids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties as well as their ability to help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease; and phenolic acid, which also has anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and heart problems.
The vitamin B in dates can be credited for promoting brain health — another great benefit of eating dates. Research shows that eating dates on a regular basis can lower risk of neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer’s disease and may also boost cognitive performances in older adults. Dates can also support healthy liver function and its ability to keep waste and harmful substances out of the body.
With so many great nutrients and benefits for the body, there is no reason not to make dates a part of your daily diet. And there are so many easy ways to do so. Dates are a great snack on their own but can be paired with fresh fruit or a serving of nuts like almonds or walnuts (other super foods) for a mid-morning or post-workout nosh. Consider slicing a banana, spreading a little cashew or sunflower butter on each slice, then topping them with chopped dates.
Blended dates make a delicious spread for toast, apple or pear slices and they can also be tossed into the blended with fruit, greens, Greek yogurt and ice for a delicious and healthy smoothie. Added to salads or side dishes, they can provide another level of texture and flavor and they can also enhance a variety of main entrees.
Don’t forget dessert! Dates dipped in dark chocolate might just be the perfect thing a sweet tooth is calling for. With so many ways to enjoy dates and all the incredible benefits, why not try some today?
