Memorial Day Fruit & Nut Gift Trays

Easy ways to elevate your backyard Memorial Day weekend celebrations

Memorial Day weekend is just days away. And while honoring those who sacrificed their lives for this country, this weekend also serves as the unofficial start of summer.

Barbeques, pool parties and graduation celebrations all tend to happen over the course of this holiday weekend as well. For those hosting Memorial Day gatherings of any kind this weekend, Sphinx Date Co. offers the following easy tips for elevating your backyard celebration.

Set the stage — Prior to the big event, plan out the flow of the party. Will there be swimming? Music and dancing? Games? A sit-down dinner at a specific time or buffet-style bites? Once these questions are answered, hosts can plan out stations for each activity. For example, for a pool party, make sure there are extra towels out as well as sunscreen, a pitcher of ice water and plastic cups nearby. Position a “dance floor” near the music, band or DJ so those who want to can cut a rug. And create an area for large outdoor games such as cornhole or bocce ball. Small accents such as themed hues for decor, flowers on the tables, and ambient lighting for evening occasions can make a big difference in the atmosphere without costing much or taking much time to do beforehand. Red, white and blue are, of course, ideal colors for Memorial Day celebrations, while grad
parties can boast the colors of the guest of honor’s school. Monochromatic themes and hues can be extremely elegant and easy, too.

Plan a “serve yourself” menu — An elevated backyard Memorial Day party can also, and should be, easy and relaxed. When it comes to the menu, consider individual items that can be premade and set out for guests to serve themselves when they are ready. Think mini sliders, a burger or potato bar, personal charcuterie plates, fruit skewers and individual dessert cups. A DIY drink station with plenty of options for all ages is another easy way to encourage guests to help themselves. A themed signature drink (that
can be pre-poured or served in a punchbowl) is another great way to elevate the guest experience. Keep an eye on the stations to refill platters and bottles as needed.

Make the rounds — Hosts are typically busy grilling burgers, serving food and refilling beverages. But the guests didn’t come for the food and drinks; they came to enjoy the company. So hosts must take some time to enjoy their guests and party, too. If possible, visit with each guest, make introductions, and see if anyone needs anything. Even a few minutes spent with each guest can make the gathering more personal, comfortable, and fun for everyone, including the host!
