How to Use Some of the Season’s Best Produce

Fall seems to ignite the urge for warm, comforting foods and delicious baked goods (hello apple or pumpkin anything!). Recently, The American Heart Association posted some of the best produce of the season including apples, brussels sprouts, dates, hard squash (such as butternut and acorn), pears, pumpkins and sweet potatoes. Sphinx Date Co. suggests some ways to use these delicious foods of the harvest.

First of all, following the seasons when it comes to enjoying produce is a great idea not only because in-season foods taste the best at their peak of harvest, but also because they are often more affordable when purchased fresh in season.

Dates can be used in so many ways in fall cooking and baking. They are an excellent addition to salads as toppings, in side dishes for holiday meals and for naturally sweet desserts.

Delicious fruits like apples and pears are synonymous will fall in so many ways! They are delicious sliced thin with cheese served with grilled bread as part of a charcuterie board, chopped into fall salads with nuts like pecans or walnuts, made into soups (think creamy bisques like butternut squash soup using apple or pear as an added level of level and touch of sweetness) and of course baked with cinnamon, sugar and butter for the ultimate autumn indulgence.

Brussels sprouts are really getting the credit they deserve after being given somewhat of a culinary cold shoulder for many years. Shaved brussels make a great based for those aforementioned salads and chopped and roasted brussels are fabulous in a fall vegetable roast (with other in-season items like sweet potatoes, hard squash and pumpkin). Brussels sprouts are also delicious sauteed with diced potatoes, onions and chopped bacon for a side dish any time of day.

Hard squash and pumpkins are ideal for making fall soups. Roasted them before blending can really enhance their flavors. Using seasonings like ginger, nutmeg, cumin, cloves, cardamon and or a touch of cinnamon will really bring the fall flavor profile to the next level.

Last but not least — sweet potatoes! These babies are such an underrated superfood! They are packed with filling fiber, vitamins and minerals and have been touted for promoting gut health, supporting healthy vision and the immune system, potentially enhancing brain function and even contain cancer-fighting properties. So eat up! Sweet potatoes are like a blank canvas so they can be used to create any number of sweet or savory dishes. They also make for an easy lunch — simply microwave a sweet potato, add a little butter and cinnamon and voila — tastes like fall!

Sphinx Date Co. encourages food enthusiasts to use the produce that is at the prime this season. There are so many ways to get innovative with these foods. So get in the kitchen and have fun with fall cooking!
