Frightfully Fun Treats for Halloween and Spooky Season
Halloween is just days away, but spooky season can last all throughout the fall... with frightfully fun and simple treats that evoke the feelings and flavors of autumn. Sphinx Date Co. offers some tips for whipping up some simple, spooky and festive fall treats.
Mummy-wrapped brie with date jam —
Serving up a rich and delicious snack that also has a little bit of the Halloween spirit is always more delicious when brie is involved! Remove a wheel of brie from its packaging and top with date jam and freshly chopped dates and crushed almonds (if desired). Then wrap the wheel and toppings with strips of puff pastry so it creates a “mummy-wrapped” appearance. Brush with an egg wash, add two whole almonds for “eyes” and then bake at 400 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes until the puff pastry is golden brown. Serve with green apple slices and crackers of choice.
Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats —
Love or hate that colorful layered candy, it’s a Halloween staple! For a twist on this treat, refer to the classic Rice Krispies treat recipe for melting the marshmallows and butter, then divide the mixture into three parts. Add orange food coloring to one third and yellow food coloring to one third; leave the final third as is. Mix in the Rice Krispies, then layer a prepared dish with the yellow mixture first, the orange mixture next and the plain mixture last, using wax paper to help spread and press the mixture into layers. Top with candy corns and allow to set before cutting and serving.
Pretzel Webs —
Pretzel webs make for a sweet and salty treat that’s just a little spooky, and very satisfying. On a sheet of parchment paper, arrange eight mini pretzel sticks so the tips of each are at the center and the ends are spaced out; repeat to make multiple webs. Then drizzle melted chocolate (dark, milk and or white will do) around the shapes in circles, to create the look of a spider web and add extra chocolate to the center. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt, if desired.
Char-Boo-terie Board —
“Carve” a soft cheese ball with indentations like a pumpkin and set it as the focal point of a spooktacular char-boo-terie board. Then build around it with other spooky snacks such as:
- Ghost-shaped pieces of mozzarella and pumpkin-shaped pieces of cheddar using cookie cutters
- Cheesy broomsticks made with string cheese and mini pretzel sticks
- “Eyeballs” made with a green olive in the center of a mini mozzarella ball wrapped with a thin piece of prosciutto
After Halloween comes and goes, the fall season evokes cozy snacking including all things pumpkin, apple and cinnamon flavored. Dates are excellent complements for each of these flavors — so take advantage of adding them into a variety of sweet and savory fall recipes!
