The different types of Dates
No, we’re not talking blind versus double – we’re talking varieties of dates, here! Today, we’re sharing a little information about the different kinds of dates we offer at Sphinx. Each variety has its own unique characteristics so read on and get educated on a few types of dates we offer.
Medjool — Available year-round at Sphinx. Perhaps the most well known of the date family, Medjool dates are generally considered the “best” dates… But that’s subjective, of course, as we love all types of dates around here! Perhaps they are considered the “best” because they are the biggest (and doesn’t bigger mean better?) of the date varieties. But it’s probably because they are sweet, soft and generally moist enough to be eaten fresh or dried. Medjool dates are hand-sorted at Sphinx by size and moisture content — Jumbo Grade (the largest, sweetest and juiciest of the bunch), Large Grade (still moist and sweet, but not quite Jumbo sized) and Fancy Grade (smaller sized dates that may have loose or broken skins and may be slightly drier than Jumbo or Large). Depending on how you’re using them, Jumbo Grade are great for gift giving while Fancy are perfect for use in baking cooking, Medjool dates are your go-to date.
Black Sphinx Dates — Available in limited quantities in Fall. These hybrid dates first appeared in the 1920’s in the Phoenix area. They are smaller, sweeter and have a thinner skin than Medjool dates. Primarily found in Arizona, particularly in the Arcadia area of Phoenix, these special dates have been categorized as an Ark of Taste Food by Slow Food USA, an organization that includes more than 200 foods that are at risk of extinction.
Khadrawy Dates — Available in limited quantities in Fall. Smaller than Medjool dates, Khadrawy dates are mild, sweet and have a soft, caramel-like texture.
We also offer other specialty varieties in limited quantities during harvest from Phoenix area boutique growers. This includes Barhi, Honey, Halawi, Hayani, Khalasa, Maresco, Maktoom, and Deglet. Specialty varieties are available at Sphinx around mid-September through November
Depending on how you’re using them — for baking, in salads or simply for snacking — there is a date for every occasion! Explore the different tastes and textures of all our date varieties and chose your favorite.
