Delicious Whole Food Swaps for a Healthier Lifestyle

There is no doubt that packaged foods and snacks and meats have become a part of everyday life. They are enticing the convenience of them sometimes is tough to avoid. But for people that are committed to reducing their intake of packaged foods or meat for health or environmental, it’s good to know that there are lots of natural and delicious whole foods that can take their place. Sphinx Date Co. offers four whole foods that are versatile healthy and yummy too!

Nuts — Those that love the satisfying crunch that comes from a bag of chips or the salty taste of popcorn at the movies might consider swapping those out for nuts. Roasted or raw, nuts not only offer the crunch of a typical chip, they are loaded with protein, so they are filling and satisfying.

Mushrooms — Mushrooms are so versatile! They are like sponges, so they can absorb flavors of spices, herbs, marinades or sauces very well. For those that want to try to reduce their intake of red meat or any animal protein in general, mushrooms are a great substitute. Consider a grilled portobello mushroom cap in place of a ground beef patty on burger night, for example. Mushrooms can also be chopped up and sauteed in place of ground chicken for Asian-style lettuce cups.

Beans — Like mushrooms, beans are very versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. Think of them as a blank canvas — and “color” them with any seasonings to fit with a variety of cuisines. Since there are so many varieties, black beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans (the list goes on and on), those experimenting with beans in place of meats are sure to find something they like. They can be used to create veggie patties, dips and as part of soups and stews… there are so many creative and delicious ways to use beans.

Dried Fruit — For a sweet fix in place of a chocolate bar or candy, dried fruit is a great whole food substitute (be sure to look for natural ones without any added sugar). But dried fruit can also be used to thicken up smoothies and in savory dishes from salads to pastas as well. Think of them as little flavor bombs that can be used to add vibrancy, texture and taste to a number of dishes.

When trying to avoid or limit intake of packaged, processed foods or animal products, it’s good to know that there are options out there. Sometimes it takes a little thinking outside the box and experimentation to find a substitute that is as satisfying as a favorite snack or food, but in the name of health, it’s worth it! Sphinx Date Co. encourages people to have fun with the process!
