Dates are truly nature’s candy! While they are versatile enough to be used in both sweet and savory ways, Sphinx Date Co. is offering up some easy ways to incorporate them as a natural sweetener in recipes in place of refined white sugar, honey or artificial sweeteners.

Add them to Smoothies — Adding pitted dates to smoothies is a refreshing way to add both a touch of naturally sweet flavor and a bit of texture, as dates will help thicken a smoothie. Dates are particularly delicious in green or veggie-centric smoothies since fruit-based smoothies tend to have enough natural sweetness of their own (but feel free to add some dates to any kind of smoothie to give it some variety!).

Make them into Jam — Date jam or butter can be enjoyed with sliced apples, slathered on a muffin or added to a baked brie to give it a subtle sweetness. Dates take on a caramel-like taste and texture once turned into jam so the sweet possibilities are endless when it comes to how to use it! Drizzle it on pancakes or a scoop of ice cream or simply enjoy it by the spoonful.

To make date jam:

  • -Cut the dates in half lengthwise and remove the pits
  • -Put them in a saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a rolling boil
  • -Reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes
  • -Remove the dates from the water (but save about a half cup of the water)
  • -Transfer dates and some of the water to a blender
  • -Add a tablespoon of 100 percent maple syrup, a dash of salt, cinnamon (or another favorite spice such as pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice), and a squeeze of lemon juice or a teaspoon of orange extract (get creative!)
  • -Pulse all ingredients together, adding more water if needed to achieve desired consistency -Transfer mixture to an airtight jar and store in the refrigerator

Replace Sugar or Honey with Them — Date jam or blended dates (date paste) can be used in a variety of dessert recipes either as a replacement for the sugar called for or as a key component of the dessert. Because dates are vegan and gluten-free, they are a great way to make a healthy dessert for those with specific dietary needs or preferences. Dates make excellent pecan pie bars and energy bites, mock Lara Bars, and more.

When it comes to how to use dates as a sweetener, there are so many options. When making a sweet treat, consider using dates to make the dessert just a touch
