This September is definitely a time to celebrate at Sphinx Date Co. After all, it’s not every day that a
locally owned company turns 70 years old! Sphinx Date Co. is thrilled to be celebrating this incredible
milestone and has the community to thank for all its continued support through the years.
Sphinx Date Co. has a rich history deeply rooted in the heart of the valley. While current owners and
proprietors Sharyn and Rebecca Seitz took ownership of this local legacy in 2012, Sphinx’s history begins
with the discovery of a Black Sphinx seedling way back in 1928.
Found in a residents yard, the then new or unknown variety of date was grown from a seedling versus
an offshoot and soon the idea for Sphinx Date Ranch was born… and acres these were planted in the
Phoenix neighborhood of Arcadia. The name “Sphinx” was given to the date due to its mysterious
origins.
Since that time, Sphinx Date Ranch has evolved greatly and become a true institution in the Valley of the
Sun. With decades of history behind it, and so much ahead, Sphinx is happy to celebrate this 70-year
milestone and all the history that has led up to this time.
In celebration of our anniversary, Sphinx Date Co. has received a proclamation from City of Scottsdale
Mayor David D. Ortega. Mayor Ortega presented owners Sharyn and Rebecca with an official statement
proclaiming Thursday, September 16 through Saturday, September 18 to be “Sphinx Date Company
Days.”
Sphinx is also celebrating with sales and specialty 70-year anniversary merchandise. Beginning Thursday,
September 16, we are offering guests 20 percent off all orders over $20 using code 1951 (the
year Sphinx Date Co. was originally founded). This weeklong promotion ends Thursday, September 23.
Sphinx Date Co. has also partnered with local company High Jinks to create specialty 70-year
merchandise including stickers, bar towels, t-shirts and totes, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting
the Scottsdale Historical Society. The company is also featuring an exclusive 70-year anniversary tote
bag filled with Sphinx originals including dates, date salsa and hot sauce, and anniversary
merchandise.
Of course, loyal date fans are always welcome to stop in throughout the month (or anytime!) to
celebrate with Sphinx! We are proud to be celebrating its 70th year in the Valley and hopes to be
